Artificial and 3D-Printed Skin Advances for Robots, Humans
Artificial and 3D-Printed Skin Advances for Robots, Humans Artificial and 3D-Printed Skin Advances for Robots, Humans Artificial and 3D-Printed Skin Advances for Robots, HumansSkin, the largest organ in the human body senses temperature, pressure, and pain. Recent advancements in artificial and 3D-printed skin could soon deliver those sensations and mora to robots, prosthetics, and humans.Todays artificial skin uses sensors, microelectronics, and conductive materials to feel sensations. Scientists are also using human cells and 3D printing to make human skin that can be used to cover wounds or as a permanent replacement for lost skin. Engineering advances for artificial skin and human skin could even merge in the future, paving the way for cybernetic organisms that have both organic and biomechatronic body parts.Artificial skin developed by engineers and scientists at Caltech and ETH Zurich can detect temperature changes. Image CaltechArtificial SkinsArtificial skin uses sensors to h elp prosthetics and robotic limbs process sensations and perform tasks with dexterity. But the best artificial skins can only measure one stimulus. Researchers want to create artificial skin that responds to multiple stimuli the way real skin does, creating more functionality. This requires embedded arrays of nanoscale sensors. Depending on the number of sensors and array density, artificial skin can be hundreds of times more sensitive than human skin.Researchers at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) in Austria plan to do just that by creating a nanoscale sensor that simultaneously detects temperature, humidity, and pressure. These sensors will be made of a smart polymer core which expands depending on the humidity and temperature, and a piezoelectric shell, which produces an electric current when pressure is applied, said Anna Maria Coclite, principal investigator and assistant professor at TU Grazs Institute for Solid State Physics. These smart cores would be sandwiched betwee n two nanoscale grids of electrodes, which sense the electrical charges given off when the sensors feel and then transmit this data. The idea is that it could be used like robotic hands to sense temperature or even things at a much smaller scale than humans can feelfor example, bacteria, she says. For You The Best Engineering Stories of 2018In other developments, scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Washington have created a silicone rubber skin that simultaneously detects muster forces, shear forces, and vibration with great accuracy. The material is embedded with tiny channels that contain conductive liquid metal. When a robot finger covered in this skin slides across a surface, some of the material grows taut and some bulge. This alters the flow of electricity within the channels, which is an indication of how much shear force and vibration the skin is experiencing. This extra sensing ability will help robots or individuals with prosthetic s complete gripping and manipulating tasks more effectively.Traditionally, tactile sensor designs have focused on sensing the individual modalities of normal forces, shear forces, or vibration exclusively, says Veronica Santos, a co-researcher and associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at UCLA. However, dexterous manipulation is a dynamic process that requires a multimodal approach. The fact that our latest skin prototype incorporates all three modalities creates many new possibilities for machine learning-based approaches for advancing robot capabilities.Organic-Based SkinA team of engineers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and ETH Zurich has developed an artificial skin made from pectin, a naturally occurring long-chain molecule present in plant cell walls. Pectin is widely used in the food industry as a jellifying agent, said Chiara Daraio, professor of mechanical engineering and applied physics at Caltech. It is used to make jam, so it is easy to obtain and also very cheap. This unique material consists of a thin, transparent film of pectin and water that is about 20 micrometers thick, just a bit thicker than a strand of human hair, and generates an electrical response when exposed to temperature changes. Pectin molecules have a weakly bonded ersatzdarsteller-strand structure that contains calcium ions.As temperature increases, these bonds break down and the double strands unzip, releasing the positively charged calcium ions, according to the team. This results in a decrease in the electrical resistance throughout the material, which can be detected with a multimeter connected to electrodes embedded in the film. The researchers note that existing electronic skins sense temperature changes of less than a tenth of a degree Celsius across a five-degree temperature range. This new skin can sense changes that are an order of magnitude smaller, with a responsivity that is two orders of magnitude larger than those of other el ectronic skins over a 45-degree temperature range. The material could be grafted onto prosthetic limbs to restore temperature sensing in amputees, the researchers wrote. It could also be applied to first-aid bandages to alert health professionals of a temperature increasea sign of infection in wounds.Bioprinter prototype. Image Universidad Carlos III de MadridBioprinting Human SkinImpressive advances are also being made in the 3D printing of human skin in the laboratory. For example, researchers from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Hospital General Universitario in Valencia, Spain, have created a 3D bioprinter that creates totally functional human skinin its natural layered structurethat is suitable for transplantation. Allogeneic skin is generated from a stock of cells on a large scale autologous skin is made from an individuals own cells for therapeutic use, such as treatment for severe burns. Bioinks using these cellular components are the key to 3D bioprinting healthy, funct ional skin. Knowing how to mix the biological components, in what conditions to work with them so that the cells dont deteriorate, and how to correctly deposit the product, is critical to the process, said researcher Juan Francisco del Caizo from Hospital General Universitario.Another group has successfully printed human skin with natural pigmentation. Scientists at the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology and the Singapore Center for 3D Printing at Nanyang Technology University used bioprinting to control the distribution of melanin-producing skin cells on a biomimetic tissue substrate, creating skin with pigmentation like that of real human skin.Scientists at the University of Toronto have developed a handheld 3D skin printer that applies layers of skin tissue directly on wounds. The device represents an alternative to painful skin grafts. A similar printer has been invented at Wake Forest School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, N.C., which uses a bioink that contains a vari ety of skin cells. According to the school, a scanner is used to determine wound size and depth. Different types of skin cells are found at different depths. This data then guides the printer as it applies layers of the correct type of cells to cover the wound.A lesser-known benefit of bioprinting human skin is its potential for eliminating the testing of cosmetics and other chemical products on animals. For example, LOreal has partnered with bioengineering company Organovo to provide 3D-printed skin samples, which enables product safety and wertmiger zuwachs testing without using animals. The bio-inspired sensor skin can be wrapped around a finger or any other part of a robot or prosthetic device to help convey a sense of touch. Image UCLA EngineeringMelding Science and NatureArtificial skin will one day be implanted in humans, while advances in artificial skin will improve the technology for developing human skin or even creating a super skin. However, before this can happen, the s tructure and mechanical properties of this organ require much more study. For example, scientists know little about how skin stretches or how to determine its tension. This is really important to surgeons, who need to know in which direction they should cut skin to avoid extensive scarring, said Michel Destrade, an applied mathematician at the National University of Ireland Galway who is developing mathematical models for the behavior of soft tissue. The people who create artificial skin need to know how to deal with mismatches in tension when they connect it to real skin. This includes knowing the best way to cut and stretch it.Coclite of TU Grazs Institute hopes to make sensors that can detect more stimuli, such as acidity or sweat. Perhaps in the future people who have lost a limb or suffered burns will benefit from such multi-stimuli sensing capabilities in convincingly human artificial skin.It would be fantastic if we could apply it to humans but theres still lots of work that n eeds to be done by scientists in turning electronic pulses into signals that could be sent to the brain and recognized, she said.Mark Crawford is an independent writer.Read More Extremely Lightweight Nanocardboard Is Stronger than Corrugated Cardboard Synthetic Ice Gets Closer to the Real Thing 3D-printed Lithium-ion Battery Could Power Electric Vehicles, Drones For Further Discussion

5 Critical Mistakes that Could Destroy Your Career
5 Critical Mistakes that Could Destroy Your Career5 Critical Mistakes that Could Destroy Your Career This is that time of the year when many of us start to review our career this usually starts with an audit of the past year - we review our goals, what we achieved and what we didnt, and career highlights from the past year . It is then followed by setting resolutions and career goals for the new year. While there is notlagehing wrong with setting goals and making career resolutions for the new year, it is important that your career plans for this new year is made with a focus on one thing mistakes to avoid. If you want to achieve your career goals this year and have a much successful career than in previous years, you need to avoid ansicht mistakes. Making one or mora of them could destroy your careerMost people wrongly assume that their career progression depends on their IQ and academic qualifications. This is very far from the truth. While these could have got ten you a job, you will need much more than that to have a progressive career.According to Law Settlement Funding , By far, one of the most important things if you want to move up in your career is to have a good relationship with your co-workers and superiors. In fact, this is often reported to be more important than other factors. If, on the other hand, you are not on good terms with co-workers and superiors and you think it is just enough to do an excellent job, dont be surprised if you are out of a job soon enough. Many people sacrifice sleep in the belief that it is required to achieve their career goals and objectives. Not only is this not true, but it can be very dangerous. Besides the fact that lack of sleep has been linked to psychopathic behavior (and remember, not being able to get along well with employees and higher-ups can destroy your career), research actually shows that not getting adequate sleep does not necessarily give people the performance boost they assume the y are getting. Instead, getting inadequate sleep (less than six hours daily for an adult) leads to the same effect as being drunk it diminishes your performance and reduces your cognitive abilities. So, if sleeping less is part of your plan to achieve your career goals, it could diminish your performance and reduce your cognitive abilities. It could also lead to you making career-damaging mistakes (since you could be operating on the same level as a drunkard). While many will advocate diversifying as key to success, focus is what really makes a great career. Putting a lot of focused, undivided attention into being the best at what you do will lead to you having a stronger career than diversifying your efforts and energy into a lot of things. In fact, an analysis of the billionaires on the Forbes 400 list found that the majority of these billionaires got to where they are by being focused on one thing and reaching the peak of their career in the area of their focus. If you take a look at people at the top of your industry you will most likely notice the same thing.Diversifying could limit your career trajectory. It could even destroy it. If youre an accountant, for example, you will stand a better chance career-wise getting your CPA than learning to bake as a side skill. If you want to move forward in any industry, networking is the rule of the game networking allows you to be aware of more opportunities, to connect to more people in your industry and to know about how things work beyond just your workplace.Dont make the mistake of limiting yourself by not networking - not only could it limit your growth potential, but it could make you redundant and potentially negatively affect your career prospects. Instead, network by attending industry conferences and events and connecting with people in other organizations similar to yours.Of course, it used to be that (for the most part) what you do in your private life has little bearing on your career. Not anymore. In th e age of social media and super fast information transmission, especially where most information deutsche bundesposted online remain there permanently, not minding what you post on social media could not only cost you your current job, but it could also cost you future jobs and prevent you from moving forward in your career.Being careful about what you post on social media should be paramount on the list of steps you take to advance your career - ignoring this rule could affect you beyond just this year. It can affect your career prospects forever.

When to Take Breaks in Your Job Search
When to Take Breaks in Your Job SearchWhen to Take Breaks in Your Job Search6Hunting for a new position is similar to holding a job, as the process takes a great deal of time, energy, and focus. And just like you need breaks from work in order to recharge, occasionally stepping away from a job search can prove a smart decision.Think you could use a respite? (Tip if you immediately answered yes, you probably do.)Heres a look at when might be advantageous to take breaks in your job searchYoure exhibiting signs of frustration or exhaustion. When you find yourself yelling at an empty emaille inbox, describing your job search to a friend as beating my head against a wall, snapping at your spouse for simply asking about your day, or downing five cups of coffee by 11 a.m. in an effort to stay engaged, chances are negative feelings have reached a (pun intended) breaking point.Repetitive tasks that dont bring about the desired resultare notorious for sapping our energy, says Denise Dudley, aut hor of Work It Get In, Get Noticed, Get Promoted. If youre feeling depressed, cranky, bitter, weepy, angry, short-tempered- choose just about any negative emotion- its likely based upon psychological exhaustion. Youre out of energy, so take a break.Youre lacking productivity.Does accomplishing objectives seem harder than when your job search began? (You do still set goals, right?) When concentration and output wane, taking a job search break may be in order. As Dudley notes, At the point where you find yourself daydreaming for super-long periods of time, or surfing the net for cool vacation destinations, or deciding you must walk your dog for the tenth time in the past two hours- rather than focusing on your job search- its time to give it a rest. If you look at your work output for the day and its embarrassingly paltry- maybe just a few resumes sent out to companies youre not even familiar with- youre suffering from burnout. Youll be much more productive if you can step away for jus t a bit and return with a refreshed outlook.Youre using poor judgment. Finally, consider it a big red flag when your desire to wrap up a job search leads you into unwanted territory. Straying away from what you really want can have long-term career repercussions and may land you right back to job hunting upon discovering the mistake. stopp to reflect. When you reach a point of burnout and exhaustion, your brain becomes bad at making decisions about things that otherwise would seem obvious, Dudley says. If you find yourself starting to say, Well, maybe a career in the Port-o-potty cleaning industry wouldnt be so bad (no offense to the wonderful people at Port-o-potty), its time to step away from the job search for a bit. As our judgment becomes impaired, were apt to settle for things we wouldnt normally settle for and to justify behaviors that dont really represent us. We become unable to accurately reflect and to plan our next move, which is not a good mindset for job hunting.

The Legal Advantage
The Legal Advantage The Legal Advantage The Legal AdvantageEngineering and law are two fields that require intensive study. Succeed in either and youve accomplished something. But, if you can succeed in both, there are more opportunities than you might think.Unexpected ReturnsAfter Kelly Kubasta received his mechanical engineering degree from the University of Texas at Austin, he decided to continue on at the school for his legal degree. Many engineers were finding it more valuable to get three to five years in the real world and then go back for an MBA, he says. For me, I was not in a location where I felt confident that I would want to stop my career midway and go back so I looked for an option that would suit me right away and that was law school. What he didnt expect was the advantage his engineering studies gave him as an intellectual property lawyer. The ability to analyze complicated concepts and having strong public speaking skills are advantages in acquiring both an engineeri ng and law degree.I can break down complicated concepts and translate them into understandable pieces that non-technical individuals cant understand, says Kubasta. I can remember picking up inthree or fourminutes the key aspects of an invention at issue in a court case that took my colleague, who has an electrical engineering degree, 25 to 30 minutes to drill down to what the real issue was. Thats valuable. It also helps him in picking expert witnesses. You have to find out what is the pivot point of the case that will take the case in your favor or against you, he says. Once you identify that you look for the witness with expertise and skills that best matches your critical issue in the case. With me, my engineering background helps me filter. So what are areas engineers may have difficulty in when it comes to becoming a successful lawyer? Public speaking is not always the fruchtwein fun thing to do for an engineer, Kubasta says. So its getting over that hesitation and getting comfo rtable in front of a large group of people where in some shape or form they are judging you. To get over it took repetition. And I find that the more familiar with the subject matter, I am the more confident I am.Patent KnowledgeAnd law school itself, Kubasta says, may require a change of thinking. The exams and testing are very different than engineering, he says. In engineering theres a right or wrong answer but in law school you learn that most cases are not a right or wrong answer but picking an answer and supporting it (with evidence).David Cornwell, also an intellectual property lawyer, is actually in a firm with several employees who are both lawyers and mechanical engineers. I protect kapitnspatents, he says. When I deal with inventors they definitely want someone with my engineering backgroundif theyve come up with a new transmission, they dont want to talk to someone who doesnt understand what they do. If it involves heat transfer thermodynamics, they dont want to spend mo ney to get a lawyer up to speed.A law degree also provides an advantage to those creating engineering products, according to Cornwell. Engineers who learn law can come up with a breakthrough invention without maybe blowing their patent rights, he says. Ive had to turn some clients away because they drafted a lousy contract with the person they co-developed something with. Or you work for a company in the daytime and go home and develop an invention and dont realize what would belong to you or them.Hes also used his knowledge to represent large companies, from Medtronic to Reebok. For an athletic shoe, you have to know about areas such as physiology and for a company like Medtronic, its knowing about that and things like fluid flow, he says.To Cornwell, opportunities for a mechanical engineer with a law degree are growing. I think there are not enough good people who have technical degrees and law degrees in this economy, he says. A lot of patent firms are hiring and we need engineer s and scientists who can practice. Believe meEric Butterman is an independent writer.Engineers who learn law can come up with a breakthrough invention without maybe blowing their patent rights.David Cornwell, intellectual property lawyer

The Law of Comparative Advantage and How It Can Benefit Your Life
The Law of Comparative Advantage and How It Can Benefit Your Life At some point or another, you probably took a class in economics and theres a good chance that class left a bad taste in your mouth. Unfortunately, economics seems, to many of us, to be one of those subjectsyou eitherunderstand or you dont. But the fact of the matter is that, when economics is really broken down, everything is very logical and super applicable to everyday life. One of the theories that is especiallyuseful for fruchtwein of us isthe law of comparative advantage. Understanding this concept and how to utilize it can greatly benefit both your career and your personal life. What Is Comparative Advantage?Brown Consultancygives a pretty thorough explanation of the concept of comparative advantage on its websiteEven if a country can produce everything more efficiently than another country, there is still scope for trade. A c ountry can maximize its wealth by putting its resources into its most competitive industries, regardless of whether other countries are more competitive in those industries. This is called the law of comparative advantage. Um, What DoesThat Mean?In laymans terms, the law of comparative advantage meansthat, if you can easily grow apples but have to work hard hard togrow oranges, and your friend Joe has an easier time growing oranges than apples, it makes sense for you both to stick to your specialties and trade resources. You should grow apples, and Joe should grow oranges. If you need oranges, you should trade with Joe for them, and Joe should trade with you for your apples. This concept relates stronglyto the importance of asking for help when you need it, which can be tough for a lot of us. However, if you look at it from an economic perspective, it makes perfect sense Why would you put so much unnecessary effort into something when you could do what youre best at, with less effort , and get what you need from someone else who has an easier time creating it?The law of comparative advantage allows us all to maximize our productivity and efficiency while benefitting from trading. How to Utilize This Concept in Your LifeThe best way to maximize your productivity in life and at work is to focus on what youre fantastic at and outsource what gives you trouble.Think about it in terms of taking a test At a young age, we are taught that if we getstuck on a problem during a test, we should skip it and schliff the problems we know how to do. There is no point in wasting time trying to solve a problem you dont know how to solve when you could be spending that valuable time answering all of the other questions you can solve. In other words Dont waste valuable time killing yourself over something that someone else can easily help you withDo what you can, share your expertise, and ask for aid from others when you need it If we were all good at the same things, no one would hav e any jobs. That is why we are all employed in different careers.Think about it You visit your doctor for medical advice and your hair stylist for a haircut. You probably wouldnt ask the person cutting your hair for medical advice, nor would you ask your doctor to cut your hair. There is absolutely no shame in accepting and acknowledging that you arent perfect at everything. That fact is what makes our society so productive If we all tried to spread ourselves thin and do it all, chances are that nothing would get done. Its better to focus on one skill and be great at it than it is to focus on a lot of things and be mediocre at them all.Want to Learn More?If the law of comparative advantageis something that interests you, do yourself a favor and read the book Freakonomics. (This book has become so reputable that its even in Microsoft Words dictionary it didnt even get the red squiggly line when I typed this)Freakonomicsexplores seriouseconomic concepts, but explains them in ways that even the non-economically-inclinedcan understand. Economics can be tricky, but when explained in the right way,the subject can teach you a lot of valuable lessons for your life

3 people who add instant influence to your network
3 people who add instant influence to your network3 people who add instant influence to your networkWhile its useful to cultivate an extensive network of professional contacts, its even more beneficial to develop a strong, tight-knit, inner circle of individuals, each of whom fulfills a specific role. Think of them as your personal mainboard of directors- a carefully curated collection of leaders you consult for the multifaceted mix of advice, feedback, and support they provide. Just as companies take great care in selecting their corporate board members, so should you.At a recent Women in Computing conference, I spoke to Nehal Mehta, Global Alliance Director with Veritas Technologies LLC. Mehtas inner circle is bedrngnis only a diverse group of leaders, influencers, and corporate heavy hitters, they also inspire, challenge, and motivate zu sich to make bold moves. But if you work in a medium- to large-sized organization, therbeie are hundreds, possibly thousands of people to join for ces with. Not aya where to start? To maximize your time while expanding your network, start with these three types of people.1. The Connector who makes introductions and helps you to grow your network.A connector is a true people person, one who seems to know- and have great relationships with- just about everyone. They are at ease around others and put others at ease. If youre taking tentative steps toward networking strategically for the first time, look for a connector first, because they love bringing people together. Connectors thrive on opening doors, making introductions, and helping you grow your network. Is there someone you know who cant resist introducing you to the right people? Consider him or her for the role of connector. Once you identify the person, share your interests, and describe the types of people youre interested in meeting. When you ask a question, you can expect a connector to link you to two or three others who know the answer.Connectors are also at the hu b of thriving professional networks. How many LinkedIn connections or Twitter followers do they have? Mehta encourages you to assess. For example, many people working in talent acquisition are good connectors, she says. And pay attention to who is organizing well-attended events at work. Then, ask for help making a new connection. Chances are theyll be energized by the request, and if so, you may have found your connector.Do your homework before asking them to make a connection, says Mehta. Build credibility first, and be specific with your request. Connectors get energized by meeting people whose skills complement their own, so offer to give them something of value that is related to your area of expertise. This could be an offer to help, share knowledge or introduce them to a new connection.2. The Informational Powerhouse who keeps you current on the buzz in your organization and in the broader business environment. This person always has his or her finger on the pulse of whats goi ng on in the organization and in the broader business environment. Seek out this individual when you need intel about new trends, ideas, projects, opportunities, resource re-allocations, and so on. Like curators of data, they filter useful business information from gossip or just noise from whats relevant and useful. They also know about important changes before they occur.According to Mehta, an informational powerhouse doesnt necessarily need to be in a senior-level leadership role. This individual usually has a breadth of knowledge and responsibility and can connect you with new projects and opportunities that will be beneficial for both parties, she says.It could be the knowledgeable colleague who everyone looks to for the final word in meetings because this person is so well-versed in how customers relate to your product. Or the colleague whos acting as a bridge between cross-functional teams because his or her expertise spans across departments such as engineering, marketing, and finance. Its the person you follow on Twitter or whose blog you keep coming back to because the writing about your company or industry issues is so insightful, says Mehta.I asked Mehta for tips on strengthening relationships with informational powerhouses. Let them know where your interests lie, and what youd like to learn more about, she said. To give back to an information powerhouse, invite them to an external meetup or offer to connect them with other knowledgeable experts outside your company.Make sure youve got at least one informational powerhouse on your board. You may find it useful to identify several, each with different areas of expertise. By checking in with them frequently, youll deepen your understanding of the broader business environment, and find yourself making sound predictions and business decisions more confidently and rapidly.3. The Influencer who helps you get things done in areas outside of your scope of influence. This person makes things happen. If you need folks to get on board with a new idea or initiative, tap your influencer. They are not necessarily a high-level or high-profile leader they are the change-makers who are interspersed at all levels of an organization. An influencer is someone who has earned the respect of the organization, observes Mehta. They can throw your name in the ring for a move to a different level or different project or provide an unsolicited reference. To identify influencers, pay attention to who has clout. The sources of that respect and influence may differ wildly. Some have positional power due to their seniority, but thats rarely the only source of their influence. For some, influence is tied to a track record of exceptional achievements. For others, its their deep domain expertise or understanding of what customers really need. Or, its their ability to call out groupthink, resolve conflict, get a team fired up, or lead an entire organization through transformational change. Whatever the source of their influence, when they speak, people listen. And how should you give back to an influencer? Thank them with a nice bottle of wine quips Mehta, But they will also appreciate acknowledgment. So, be on the lookout for those who are amplifying the voices of team members in meetings, advocating for their suggestions, and increasing the likelihood that those ideas are embraced and executed. And when teams get stuck, pay attention to who they automatically look to for direction. Think about who youd like to have backing you up next time you encounter a roadblock, deliver a presentation, or submit a proposal. An influencers show of support can add to your credibility and clear the path forward.Influencers have a way of eliciting agreement and collaboration from teams, and they can provide the heavy-hitting support that can guarantee the success of your initiatives. When an influencer lends his or her voice to your cause, it reduces skepticism and fortifies your credibility. And if youre not sure how best to engage with other powerful stakeholders, seek counsel from your influencers. They can help you understand your stakeholders perspectives, how to engage them, and the best way to deliver your message.Once youve identified an influencer, look for opportunities to work with them. Execute well, and then become an asset to them. Volunteer for a stretch assignment to work with them, advises Mehta. This gets you acquainted and can enable that influencer to recommend you in future.Whether your objective is to advance your career, make a course correction, lead a major project, transform an organization, or make any type of bold, fearless move, having an influential inner circle can make the journey easier. Now that you know the criteria for developing an influential network, who will you add to yours? This article appeared on Be Leaderly.

What Employers Want From Millennials
What Employers Want From Millennials What Employers Want From Millennials Millennials often enter the workforce at a disadvantage. Executives ofprevious generations sometimes perceive them as entitled or lazy because of their insistence on work/life balance, their penchant for coming at problems in non-traditional ways, or their optimistic expectations about climbing the corporate ladder. But the fact is millennials are the largest generation in the U.S. workforce, which means the corporate world will need to adapt to the younger generation just as much as the younger generation must adapt to the corporate world.Millennials make up more than one-third of the U.S. workforce, and many of these workers will be tomorrows corporate leaders. Millennials seeking to fast track their way to the top need to possess a particular set of skills to impress existing executives.A Soft ApproachWhether fresh out of college or a junior executive, any millennial who wants to sit at the boardroom table someday needs to have a number of marketable soft skills.Examples of soft skills include strong work ethic, confidence, communication skills, interpersonal skills, adaptability, next-level thinking, and ability to take initiative, says Rae Sanders, principal staffing manager and kollektiv leader of the accounting, finance, and administrative division of recruitment firm WinterWyman.Millennials grew up texting and talking online, and that means some of them dont have the same personal interaction skills that Gen. X-ers and baby boomersdeveloped. This difference in relationship styles can turn off older decision-makers from hiring millennial candidates.Candidates should make an effort to showcase their soft skill sets leading up to and during theinterview. Exude confidence without being cocky. Feature communication skills in all modes, whether it be email, phone, or face-to-face conversation. Other soft skills can be more difficult to showcase, but providing references that speak to things like innovation and work ethic can go a long way toward signing on with a company. The Hard SellOf course, being personable and confident only gets one so far. Soft skills will get the attention of a prospective employer, but hard skills are even more important. Most millennials grew up with technology that escapes the understanding of some older executives, so many companies are interested in hiring workers who can carry them into the Digital Age. That also makes competition for jobs fiercer, because generally, most applicants will be tech-savvy and capable.Millennials who want to stand out from the crowd will need to find ways to get practical experience prior to entering the workforce. The training and skills that candidates should seek are dependent on the jobs they are applying to, says Callie Adams, staffing manager for WinterWyman. However, the hard skills you gain in an internship relevant to the career track you are trying to pursue are what makes you stand out. ansich t could be applied technical skills different from learned technical skills or functional skills, such as actually processing accounts payable or arranging travel. Application of the skills youve learned is paramount in todays market. Simply put, internships are the only way to develop a hard skill set to make you stand out amongst your peers. When hiring managers make a final decision about a hire, it comes down to what experience the candidate brings to the table and what they can bring to the company.Experience that exemplifies the soft skill sets aforementioned, would be considered valuable to prospective employers, Sanders says. For example, Sanders lists the following common experiences as ways millennials can demonstrate their soft skill setsLeadership positions in clubs (confidence, ability to take initiative, and communication skills)Varied extracurricular activities along with a strong academic record (work ethic)Study abroad programs (adaptability)Internships/work-study ( applied hard skills)Fraternities/sororities (interpersonal skills)These types of activities show you have taken advantage of what college had to offer, Sanders says. This is what would make you stand out as a potential candidate when the job may initially require a year or two of experience. To be attractive to a company, younger generations must leveragetheir lives beyond work and show hiring managers how their experiences have prepared them to do the job they are applying for. Many applicants will just put their degree on the application and leave it at that. Candidates who find ways to turnlife experiences into work experiences will stand out from the crowd.

4 Tips To Revive a Feeble Résumé
4 Tips To Revive a Feeble Résumé 4 Tips To Revive a Feeble Résumé You can almost hear a recruiter scream, "I'm fed up with all the résumés that just give me the same old boilerplate language! How is it that so many job seekers boast of having great communication skills, and then fail to demonstrate them?"Virtually every professional position requires solid communication skills, and unlike a whole range of other abilities you might claim, how you present yourself in your résumé, cover letter and interview will surely reveal if you have what it takes to cut the muster in this area.Of course, depending on the field you're in, your methods of communications will be different, as will be their content. Think about the role for which you are applying, and what is intrinsic to it, to determine the kinds of communication with which you need to demonstrate expertise. Will you have to convince people? Sell to them? Convey facts and data, along with your interpretation? Provide empathetic caring and support? Some roles require precision of language that co nveys whatever is necessary without a wasted word, paralleling a surgeon's scalpel in its sharpness. Others require you to think on your feet and respond to things with passion, while still others demand painstaking study and thoughtful analysis conveyed in well-documented reports or white papers.Whatever the case might be, you shouldn't require your audience to assume that you've been successful in the kinds of communication typical for your position. You should, in both your résumé and in your interviews, relate the context in which you work, how you interact with people and how you moved your own agenda forward. The kinds of verbs you use, your sentence structure and cadence all should reflect the nature of your occupation and the job you seek.Remember that communication goes well beyond words. It includes images, tone of voice and body language. What does the way you format your résumé say about you? Is your style simple and straightforward, or complex with lots of lines, te xt boxes, or graphics? When you are interviewing, do you seek or avoid eye contact? Do you slump in your chair, fiddle with a glass of water and offer only a weak handshake? All these are elements of your style and personality and say much about you without a single word being spoken. Most of us think of ourselves as able communicators, but it is a mistake to simply assert "excellent communication" among your list of skills. Instead, take the time to be that excellent communicator by following these tips:1. Be convincing. Don't say just, "Trust me, I've got this set of skillsâ¦" Rather, in each résumé bullet point demonstrate how you have used your various skills, and the results you obtained. A mini-story does far more to capture attention and convey your abilities than saying, "Yeah, I can do that." (Whatever "that" might be.)2. Provide context. Do you communicate to others in person or online? Do you function in large or small group settings? Do you write reports, memos and abs tracts to be read by others, or do you primarily communicate in two-way settings either in person or via social media? How have your communications helped to bring about your achievements in your current and former positions?3. Define your medium. Do you achieve success by writing memos, position papers and constructing financial documentation with spreadsheets? Do you employ video or photography to get your message across? Use verbs like these at the beginning of résumé bullets: critique, declare, display, inform, interpret, issue, speak, testify, write, portray, evoke, etc. Then go on to tell the rest of the story.4. Depict your style. Do you make your point through detailed analysis of facts and policies, or do you personalize the information at hand and become a storyteller? Whatever your context might be, find a way to show you are adept at both sharing your knowledge and insights as well as listening and learning from others.Communication competencies are key to professional success. Take the time to think about your message, then carefully craft and convey it. When you do, surely you will be seen as a true professional, and you will be closer to landing your next job.Happy hunting!Arnie Fertig is the head coach of JOBHUNTERCOACH.COM, where he utilizes his extensive background in HR Staffing and as owner of a recruiting company to help mid-career job-hunters land their next job. Red Flags and Warning Signs in the Interview Process
Red Flags and Warning Signs in the Interview Process Red Flags and Warning Signs in the Interview Process Red Flags and Warning Signs in the Interview Process Putzier and David Baker Although the candidate interview and other screening tools are the key factors that we should use in making our hiring decisions, bear in mind that there are other factors that can also weigh for or against a candidateâs hireability. Also, the interview does not start when you begin asking the candidate questions in your office. It starts when he picks up the phone for a phone interview and continues when he gets out of his car in the parking lot, when he greets (or doesnât greet) your receptionist or other staff and throughout the entire process of interactions. Here are some red flags and warning signs to look for in conducting the interview: 1. Arriving late for the interview. This should be obvious, but unless there was an act of God preventing the applicant from being on time, why in the world would you expect her to come to work on time? 2. Treating your staff dismissively or disrespectfully. Remember the good old days when we had secretaries? Mine was also the receptionist in the employment office. Wanda would bring the personâs application and résumé to me for review while he was sitting in the reception area. All she would have to do was let out a sigh and a look of disgust when she laid the paperwork on my desk, which then elicited a âWhatâs wrong, Wanda?â from me. At which point, she would say, âOh, nothing. Heâs just a little arrogantâ or something of that nature. This is a case where the âhornsâ effect is valid. If the candidate treats my secretary with disrespect before he is even hired, how do you think he is going to behave on the job? This is when he should be on his best behavior! 3. Not wearing appropriate attire for the position. This is a variable. A janitor applicant might be acceptable in clean jeans and a T-shirt, although dressing up a bit would be a plus, whereas someone applying for a management position should be wearing proper business attire. Again, itâs a sign of judgment and awareness. 4. Meet and greet. Did the person extend a confident handshake, look you in the eyes, smile, and greet you? This goes for both men and women. Even a cold, clammy handshake is better than no handshake at all. Again, this indicates judgment and confidence. Note: Some cultures deems eye contact and hand-shaking inappropriate. 5. Talking too much. Even though we have been stressing the 80/20 rule, there are times when a candidate goes overboard or over limits, particularly when she lacks the judgment to know when to shut up or what not to share. This usually happens when you are using open-ended interview questions and/or clarifying statements. 6. Speaking negatively about past employers and experiences. Even though the story might be true, this is an indication of the applicantâs not taking responsibility for his own actions, or at least sharing what he learned from the experience, instead of placing blame on others for everything. Remember that in âGut Wrenchers,â we said to keep all responses positive and job-related? 7. Asking about money too soon. Granted, we all work for pay. However, good judgment says this should not be one of the first questions a candidate voices. It shows a lack of concern of the employerâs needs and priorities, demonstrates short-term, self-centered thinking, and is just poor form. 8. Showing up unprepared. This could include not bringing a pen and paper, not having her résumé with her, knowing nothing about the organization, and other such omissions. If someone approaches a job interview by the seat of her pants, itâs a pretty sure bet that she will approach her job the same way. 9. Using inappropriate language. Even if your culture is laid back and informal, it never justifies a candidateâs use of vulgarity or inappropriate language. Again, this is an indication of a lack of class, self-awareness, and self-monitoring. If he is that willing to let his guard down in a job interview, can you imagine what will happen with customers and coworkers? 10. Being vague in her responses. A key purpose of a job interview is to delve into the details of the candidateâs qualifications, that is, beyond the résumé. If she is vague, nonresponsive, or evasive in her responses, even when you use the questioning techniques referred to herein, then either she has something to hide or she is just unable to articulate her thoughts. Either way, itâs no way! 11. Exhibiting poor body language. Yes, interview body language is a legitimate barometer. Beyond the meet and greet, handshake, eye contact, and smile, if the candidate slumps in his chair, or even puts his feet up, thatâs a sign. He is on stage. A candidate should have decent posture and demonstrate that he is alert and attentive (or at least awake!) by sitting up or, even better, sitting on the edge of his seat. Leaning back, folding his arms in front of him, and other such behavior indicates closed-mindedness, or at least defensiveness, lack of confidence and/or lack of attentiveness, and maybe even arrogance. Whatever it is, it isnât a good sign. 12. Not asking any questions. Remember that in the interview setup, we said to let the candidate know that she can ask you questions at the end? When you are done asking your interview questions, you can open the floor to questions from the candidate. If she has none, or if she just asks what the job pays, then this could be a red flag. It demonstrates a lack of depth of thinking, lack of understanding of or interest in a job or an organization, or a lack of preparation, and it is also somewhat insulting to you as an employer. I-9 File Contents for Employees
I-9 File Contents for Employees I-9 File Contents for Employees Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, is the form that is required by the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), to document eligibility for employment in the United States. As an employer, you must fill out an I-9 form for every employee that you hire. Form I-9 Requirements All employees, citizens, and non-citizens, hired after November 6, 1986, must complete Section 1 of the Form I-9 at the time of hire. The employer is responsible for ensuring that Section 1 of Form I-9 is timely and properly completed by the employee. The employer also must check employment verification and ensure Sections 2 and 3 of the Form I-9 are properly filled out. Employers must complete Section 2 of Form I-9 by examining first-hand evidence- only original, unexpired documents- of identity and employment eligibility within three business days of the date employment begins. The employee must be physically present and their original documents must be reviewed in-person. The employee who reviews the original documents must sign Section 2 of the I-9. The form verifies that you have checked two approved forms of identification that prove the employee is legally authorized to work in the United States. Employers or their authorized representative need to fill out Section 3 when reverifying that an employee is eligible to work in the United States. When rehiring an employee within three years of the date the I-9 was originally completed, employers have the option of completing a new I-9 form or completing Section 3. Periodically, you need to audit the I-9 forms to ensure that you have a completed form for every employee. You need to check for veracity and completeness, and save evidence of the auditing and of any training that staff members completing or storing the I-9s have received. Therefore, its important to keep all employee I-9s, and the accompanying documentation, in a separate personnel file. Location of Completed I-9 Forms The government may inspect these forms. If government employees inspect your I-9 forms, you do not want to allow them access to your employees private personnel files and the confidential information they contain. Therefore, in the interest of employee confidentiality and restricted access, you want to isolate your employee I-9s in one folder that is specifically dedicated to I-9 storage. This protects your employees privacy and also saves the employer from potentially having to answer additional questions that are raised by the contents of the employee personnel file. Therefore, it is important to avoid opening up your company to an increased investigation by USCIS employees. Current I-9 File Investigation According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the government may inspect your I-9s: The administrative inspection process is initiated by the service of a Notice of Inspection (NOI) upon an employer compelling the production of Forms I-9. By law, employers are provided with at least three business days to produce the Forms I-9. Often, ICE will request the employer provide supporting documentation, which may include a copy of the payroll, list of current employees, Articles of Incorporation, and business licenses. Bottom Line The current trend is that ICE is increasing its enforcement efforts. Employers have increasingly faced criminal charges levied on managers, owners, and human resources (HR) staff members for failure to properly complete and store I-9 forms for every employee. Businesses have increasingly received significant fines and been debarred. It is, therefore, imperative that employers make it a priority to ensure that these forms are accurately filled out, maintained, and stored to protect the company and its employees from penalties, which can be costly.

8 ways to work with (not against) your boss source of energy
8 ways to work with (not against) your bossâ source of energy 8 ways to work with (not against) your bossâ source of energy One of best things you can do to work well with your boss is to understand whether she is an introvert or an extrovert and then adapt your communication and interaction style accordingly. Why is this important? Because extroversion and introversion are core personality preferences connected to two important interpersonal dynamics: Source of energy and preferred communication style. Building and maintaining a successful working relationship with your boss requires communicating effectively and making sure you are working with their source of energy and not against it. In other words, are you a boon or a bust to your bossâ energy? The Introvert Boss. Introverts get energized from within (their internal world of ideas and thoughts) and prefer environments with less external stimulation (like interacting with you). This means they often prefer working alone (with their doors closed) and tend to interact less with staff and colleagues. Being less externally oriented, they may be less fort hcoming with information, hold fewer meetings, check in less frequently and engage in less social chit-chat.The Extrovert Boss. Extroverts, on the other hand, get energized from the outside world of people and activity and have a higher set point and preference for more external stimulation (like interacting with you). Extroverts tend to enjoy more verbal communication and engaging with others. Because external engagement energizes them, they tend to readily share information, hold regular meetings, frequently âpop-inâ to share ideas, and like to brainstorm or think through ideas with others. While both these preferences are normal and effective, introverts are often drained by extroverts and vice versa. Try using these strategies to keep your bossâ energy tank on full:Energizing strategies for the introvert bossesDonât take their silence personally. Just because your introvert boss doesnât heartily engage you in conversation or walk about the office checking in and saying hello, doesnât mean that they donât like you. It just means that they are introverts and donât have the same need for external interactions that extroverts do. Donât make up stories about their behavior- they probably like you just fine.Get on their calendar. Be proactive about getting face time with them. Donât wait for them to come to you- if you do, you may be waiting a long time. Instead, take the initiative to schedule time with them. Itâs up to you to get on their calendar. They may cancel half of your meetings, but you will still have the other half.Give advance warning. Let them know ahead of time what you want to discuss. Prior to meeting, send an advance email with the topics youâd like to discuss or the questions you need answered. Introverts appreciate time to process information and formulate thoughts before discussing them- even if it is only a five-minute warning!Control the chatter. When you get time with your introverted manager, use it wisely. Organiz e your thoughts and get to the point. A little friendly conversation is fine, but too much chatter will quickly drain (and annoy) this boss. And if you are talking just to fill the silence, stop it. Introverts appreciate silence.Energizing strategies for the extroverted bossesEngage them. Extroverts are energized through external interaction so take the time to engage with them as often as possible- even if it is only five minutes a day. Get to know them as a person. A little positive face time and chit-chat goes a long way with this type of boss!Listen to them talk. Extroverts value information sharing. They enjoy communicating and will notice if you are tuning them out. Actively listen to your extrovert and show enthusiasm for their ideas. It may cost you a little time and energy, but it is so worth it!Speak up! Extroverts are energized by other people so be ready to share your thoughts and participate in meetings- even if you prefer to process information and ideas on your own. Y our extroverted boss doesnât expect communication perfection, just involvement and contribution. If they feel like getting you to participate is like pulling teeth, you are going to be an energy drain. Be an active part of the conversation.Clarify and recap. Not everything your extroverted boss says is an action item. Extroverts tend to think out loud as they process their ideas externally. They will often move on to new thoughts before the old ones are completed. Spend a minute or two at the end of meetings to summarize, recap and clarify action items and next steps.Mary Abbajay is the author of Managing Up: How to Move Up, Win at Work, and Succeed with Any Type of Boss, and is president and CEO of Careerstone Group, LLC.

So letâs say this is your ideal life. How do you get there? Researchers call it âPleasant activity trainingâ but I call it âthings that feel good, do them more often.âYes, it sounds stupidly simple but donât gloss over it, internet skimmer. Research shows that often you donât actually do what you enjoy the most - you do what is easiest. You might love going to the beach, but TV is quicker. If you want The Pleasant Life, make more time for the things that give you the most pleasure. And for Peteâs sake, schedule pleasurable things. If awful stuff like dental appointments get a spot on your calendar, so should awesome things. (I enjoy seeing my friends. So I donât âseeâem when I seeâemâ I have lunch with them every Friday at 1PM, like clockwork. And âBurger Nightâ is every Monday at 5PM. Dinner with Jason and Lisa is every Sunday night. Nick and I go for a walk and discuss interesting things every Tuesday night. Iâm sure youâre fascinate d by my social schedule, but the point is, with a little planning, you can make fun the default.)Now as enjoyable as The Pleasant Life sounds, itâs the least happy of the four. Why?If youâve ever stared at the ceiling at 2AM and said, âWhat am I doing with my life?â, well, The Pleasant Life canât help you with that. All it can offer you is yet another funny YouTube video of a dog on a skateboard.(To learn the 4 rituals that neuroscience says will make you happy, click here.)Alright, so The Pleasant Life is very pleasant⦠but not much more. Maybe that works for you, maybe not. So whatâs a happy life thatâs more engaging - and exciting?Happy Life #2: âThe Good LifeâThe vast majority of the people you admire did not aspire toward The Pleasant Life. Most athletes, entrepreneurs, musicians and anyone whoâs an expert in their field probably sought what Seligman calls âThe Good Life.âWhatâs that? Actively doing stuff youâre good at and getting lost in it . Trying to improve your skills. Accomplishing goals. From Authentic Happiness:The good life: using your signature strengths to obtain abundant gratification in the main realms of your life. While The Pleasant Life is all about feeling, The Good Life is focused on doing. This life means figuring out your âsignature strengthsâ - stuff youâre uniquely good at - and trying to achieve âflowâ as much as possible. Flow is when youâre working at something and youâre in the zone, not noticing the passage of time because youâre caught up in the activity. Donât underestimate how happy doing stuff youâre good at can make you:The more hours per day adults believe they use their strengths, the more likely they are to report having ample energy, feeling well-rested, being happy, smiling or laughing a lot, learning something interesting, and being treated with respect.Seligman says The Good Life tops The Pleasant Life because using your signature strengths is more lasting. Pleasure is fleeting while developing skills and achieving goals creates a more profound sense of enjoyment. Using your strengths daily can make you significantly happier for months.Via The Happiness Advantage: The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work:When 577 volunteers were encouraged to pick one of their signature strengths and use it in a new way each day for a week, they became significantly happier and less depressed than control groups. And these benefits lasted: Even after the experiment was over, their levels of happiness remained heightened a full month later. So how do you create The Good Life? Again, look to your calendar. Instead of spending more time doing stuff that feels good, spend more time using your signature strengths and being in flow. Are you a natural people person? Ask your boss if you can handle new clients instead of paperwork. Get a kick out of working with numbers? Ask your partner to clean the house and youâll handle the budget and do the taxes.Or spend hours upon hours writing research-backed blog posts. (That produces flow for at least one person I can think of.)Does The Good Life sound like work? It is. Itâs definitely not passive. If the only thing that brings you flow is watching Seinfeld reruns while eating pizza, then The Pleasant Life might be a better choice for you. And if The Good Life is taken too far it can crowd out pleasure. As easy as it is to denigrate The Pleasant Life, we all need some pleasure. And much like The Pleasant Life, The Good Life can still be meaningless. Video games are great at creating flow and devoting yourself to becoming the best World of Warcraft player ever would be an example of âThe Good Lifeâ - without being something any of us would call âa good life.â(To learn the 6 rituals ancient wisdom says will make you happy, click here.)So The Good Life beats The Pleasant Life, but itâs still far from perfect. Both of them lack real meaning. But The Good Life does hold the secret to an even better life. We just have to add one thingâ¦Happy Life #3: âThe Meaningful LifeâThe Meaningful Life is The Good Life - but youâre using your signature strengths in a way that benefits others as well as yourself. From Authentic Happiness:The meaningful life: using your signature strengths and virtues in service of something larger than you are.So not only do you get the benefits of The Good Life but you also become very satisfied with your work.Via How to Find Fulfilling Work:A major study of ethical work by Howard Gardner, Mihaly Csikszent mihalyi, and William Damon showed that those doing what they call âgood workâ â" defined as âwork of expert quality that benefits the broader societyâ â" consistently exhibit high levels of job satisfaction.Thereâs this other nice benefit to The Meaningful Life and itâs called not dying. The Japanese call meaning in life âikigaiâ (pronounced âicky guyâ.) And people that have it live longer.Via Pursuing the Good Life: 100 Reflections on Positive Psychology:Even when likely confounds were taken into account, ikigai predicted who was still alive after 7 years. Said another way, 95% of respondents who reported a sense of meaning in their lives were alive 7 years after the initial survey versus about 83% of those who reported no sense of meaning in their lives.Okay, the other lives all had weaknesses so youâre probably wondering what the catch is with this one⦠Itâs not as immediately pleasurable as The Pleasant Life. And it requires all the effort of The Good Life. And it can - every now and then - hurt. You have to care to have meaning in your life. And thatâs going to mean occasional un-pleasant feelings:Meaningful involvements increase oneâs stress, worries, arguments, and anxiety, which reduce happiness.(To learn how to unlock meaning in your life, click here.)So all of these lives have their superpowers and their kryptonites. So whatâs the best of the bunch? How do the happiest people in the world live their lives?Happy Life #4: âThe Full LifeâTake all of the previous three in moderation and you have The Full Life. From Authentic Happiness:A full life consists in experiencing positive emotions about the past and future, savoring positive feelings from the pleasures, deriving abundant gratification from your signature strengths, and using these strengths in the service of something larger to obtain meaning.Researchers have studied what the happiest people on the planet all have in common. Those folks do n ot ignore the benefits of The Pleasant Life:âThey savor lifeâs pleasures and try to live in the present moment.âAnd they put in the effort that The Good Life requires:âThey are deeply committed to lifelong goals and ambitions (e.g., fighting fraud, building cabinets, or teaching their children their deeply held values).âAnd they are devoted to helping others. They have some of that âicky guyâ from The Meaningful Life:âThey devote a great amount of time to their family and friends, nurturing and enjoying those relationships⦠They are often the first to offer helping hands to coworkers and passersby.â Any downsides to The Full Life? Yeah - it can be a lot to juggle. Itâs tricky to stay consistent. You have to find a balance that works for you. You will have to make sacrifices. But as the happiest people in the world know: itâs worth it.(To learn more about what the happiest people all have in common, click here.)Alright, weâve learned a lot. Letâs round it all up - and learn the easy way to start living The Full Lifeâ¦Sum UpHere are the different happy lives: The Pleasant Life: PLEASURE GOOD. PAIN BAD. Schedule more fun. The Good Life: Do what youâre good at and go as far down that rabbit hole of âflowâ as you can, Alice. The Meaningful Life: The Good Life + helps others. The Full Life: Enjoy the pleasures of life, leverage your skills, seek flow, and use it to help people. The Full Life might sound like a lot. It might sound hard because of formal terms like âsignature strengthsâ and intimidating concepts like âmeaning.â Donât let any of that stuff scare you off. Just try this: Every single day, do something that makes you smile. Every single day, do something youâre good at. Every single day, make sure your efforts help someone else smile. Thatâs all it takes to start living the happiest life there is.And if youâre not careful, it might turn you into a good human being at the same time. This article first appeared on Eric Barker.
